BooBook Declaration Action
Date: 03-Mar-10
Author: Meg Switzer
More than 60 groups have already signed the Boobook Declaration marking the International Year of Biodiversity.
The idea of a Biodiversity Declaration arose from an informal meeting of green groups and individuals in October last year who were concerned at the lengthening catalogue of bad news about collapsing ecosystems, climate change policy direction. The meeting decided that now was the time for some national political action that coincides with four elections in Australia, the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity celebrations, and the Copenhagen meeting in December 2009. In little more than a few months, the Declaration has gone from an idea to an action statement supported by 60 national, state and local green groups.
We encourage other local groups to consider signing up by viewing the website www.boobook.org.au. There is also a Boobook Planning Day in Canberra, Thursday 15 April 2010 which signatory groups are invited to. The purpose of this meeting is to prepare a plan for getting biodiversity back onto the national agenda and implementing the Declaration.
Please encourage others to sign up.
